John Henry Newman<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Jesus condemns those who seek the sign and not the person who creates the sign. In other words, He wants us to desire a relationship with Him and not just an object we\u2019ve been praying for. In what ways have you found yourself desiring and being attached to things, or outcomes of your prayer, instead of a deeper relationship with Jesus?<br><br><\/li><li>What signs have you been looking for? What signs have you seen? How have they been able to draw you closer to God?<br><br><\/li><li>When Fr. Manno began to pray big in his discernment, he asked God to change his heart. Is this a prayer you can begin to pray more often throughout Advent, and afterwards? In what ways would you like God to change your heart?<br><br><\/li><li>Life is about living for and dying for others; being there for others. How are you called to do this? If you\u2019re struggling with the answer to this question, consider praying about it every day with this simple prayer: \u201cGod, transform me, breathe life into me and show me how I\u2019m called to live like You.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" id=\"text-ask-for-a-sign-from-the-lord-your-god\">Text: Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Alrighty. I\u2019m excited to be here with all of you. I\u2019m Father Kyle Manno, priest of the Rockford Diocese, assigned to the Newman Center at Northern Illinois University right here in my office. Also, vocation director for my diocese, and what a blessed time it is, that we get to journey through Advent together. This is a blessing. And today, what I want to talk about is praying big, and not being afraid to actually ask for a sign. I know it\u2019s going to seem crazy, because there\u2019s many times in the scripture when Jesus is like \u201cHey, this wicked generation asked for a sign, but no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah,\u201d right. The sign of the savior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"understanding-the-sign\">Understanding &#8220;The Sign&#8221;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>So, here\u2019s a question: Does Jesus condemn signs? No. Not in themselves, right. What He\u2019s actually condemning is those who seek the sign, and not the person who creates the sign. What I mean by that is the Pharisees and the Sadducees, the Scribes, they just wanted Jesus to do a magic trick, right. They\u2019re like \u201cAlright, guy who claims to be the Messiah, show us a little magic trick, alright.\u201d They didn\u2019t care about Him. They wanted Him to do a trick, right. God does not condemn us to fall madly in love with Him, to have us asking for Him to show His love. No, He condemns us if we don\u2019t desire the relationship, we just desire some little object. A magic trick. God is not a magician. He\u2019s a lover, right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And think about what is a sign in itself. A sign, like a stop sign, has no value, right. Think about it. A stop sign is just an octagon, 8 sides, it\u2019s red, and it says \u201cStop.\u201d In itself, that sign means nothing, right. If I can\u2019t read the sign, if I don\u2019t speak English, and I see \u201cStop,\u201d if I don\u2019t know what that means I\u2019ll be confused. I would run right through that sign. I\u2019ll miss it, right. I could misinterpret it. If I think red means fire, I could think \u201cOh, there\u2019s an octagon with these letters that\u2019s red. It means danger, fire,\u201d right. So if I don\u2019t understand what the color means, right, \u201cStop,\u201d if I don\u2019t know \u201cStop\u201d means stop, then I miss the sign. But the sign by itself is nothing. It\u2019s just an image. And so if we attach to the sign, we\u2019ll miss the point, right. Does that make sense? We don\u2019t attach to the sign, we attach to the person who gives the sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"god-send-me-a-sign\">&#8220;God Send Me A Sign&#8221;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>So let me give you an example, alright. When I was discerning, I was asking God for a sign all the time. I\u2019m like \u201cJesus, alright, if you want me to be a priest, just, right, send me a box, I\u2019ll open it up, and it will say \u2018Be a priest\u2019 or something, right. And I\u2019ll go. I\u2019ll do it.\u201d And so I would pray for this every single day. \u201cGod, send me a sign.\u201d And you know what? At one point, I got to be honest, He kind of gave me a sign, and I\u2019ll tell you what it was. I was in mass one weekend, and I was also serving on the campus. You know, when you\u2019re at a college campus, little kids don\u2019t serve, like, the students do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I was serving mass, and I just received communion, and I was about 4 feet away from the lady giving out communion, and I could hear her saying \u201cBody of Christ. Body of Christ. Body of Christ.\u201d And all of a sudden, I swear, like, as clear as day, I heard her say \u201cBody of Christ. Body of Christ. Be a priest.\u201d And I was like \u201cWhat?\u201d I was like \u201cExcuse me? What did you just say?\u201d And she went back to saying \u201cBody of Christ. Body of Christ. Body of Christ.\u201d And I was, like, super confused. So I was like \u201cAlright Jesus, did I just hear her say \u2018Be a priest\u2019? No, I must have misheard her. I\u2019m going crazy. No, I\u2019m mishearing her speak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I went back to praying. And in the background again I could hear \u201cBody of Christ. Body of Christ. Body of Christ.\u201d And all of a sudden, I swear, I heard a second time \u201cBody of Christ. Body of Christ. Be a priest.\u201d And I was like \u201cWhat? What did you just say?\u201d And again I was like \u201cAlright Jesus, I swear I heard it a second time, her say \u2018Be a priest\u2019. That was weird.\u201d And so now I\u2019m thinking I\u2019m crazy, right, and so I was like \u201cAlright, I know what I\u2019ll do. I\u2019m going to sit here and listen to her say \u2018Body of Christ,\u2019 and I\u2019m going to make her say \u2018Be a priest.\u2019\u201d And if I can hear her say \u201cBe a priest,\u201d then I could rationalize it, right. I could go \u201cOh, okay, okay, okay. Yeah, I heard it wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I was kneeling there, and I\u2019m like \u201cSay it. Say it.\u201d She\u2019s saying \u201cBody of Christ. Body of Christ.\u201d And I was like \u201cOkay. Say it so that I can hear it.\u201d \u201cBody of Christ. Body of Christ.\u201d And I couldn\u2019t. She just kept saying \u201cBody of Christ.\u201d I didn\u2019t hear her say \u201cBe a priest.\u201d And after I gave up, I swear, a third time I heard her say \u201cBe a priest,\u201d and I was like \u201cThat was weird.\u201d So I left mass that day and I thought \u201cYou know, I\u2019m not going to tell anybody that, because that was really weird. I swear I heard her say 3 times \u2018Be a priest\u2019 while she was giving out communion.\u201d So I told nobody. Sunday, I went to bed. Monday happened, I went to bed. Tuesday. And then Wednesday came, it was 9 PM mass because I was on a college campus, right. Still here. Sunday mass, 9 PM, Wednesday mass, 9 PM, right I\u2019m ready to go to sleep at 9 PM. That\u2019s why I drink coffee in the evening, alright, because college students don\u2019t go to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyhoo, I was at 9 PM mass, and they read their readings, they read the gospel, and the priest started preaching. And he started preaching on the first reading, or the one reading, and what the reading was about, and the entire homily, was about a man being called 3 times. Let me repeat that: It was about a man being called 3 times. And the first time he\u2019s confused. He\u2019s like \u201cWho\u2019s calling me?\u201d Again, the second time he\u2019s called, and he\u2019s confused. He\u2019s like \u201cWhat am I hearing?\u201d Not until the third time did he recognize this, that he\u2019s hearing God\u2019s voice. And I\u2019m sitting there in the pews, right, and I\u2019m like \u201cWhat is happening? 3 days ago I swear I heard \u2018Be a priest\u2019 3 times.\u201d I didn\u2019t tell anybody, and now the priest is preaching about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So after mass I ran to his office. I mean, I was like a crazy person. I\u2019m like *knock* *knock* *knock* *knock* *knock* *knock* *knock*. \u201cMonsignor!\u201d I knocked. \u201cOkay, open the door.\u201d Right. I came to this office right here, and I was like \u201cHey Monsignor. Okay, so, crazy story, alright, okay. Crazy story. 3 days ago I was at mass, and I could have sworn the lady giving out communion who was saying \u2018Body of Christ\u2019 said \u2018Be a priest.\u2019 And then you just talked about a guy being called 3 times. Am I supposed to go to seminary?\u201d And he\u2019s sitting with me and he said \u201cOkay, okay, okay, okay. Well, God, I think, spoke to you.\u201d He said \u201cWell, we never run with a sign.\u201d He said \u201cAsk God what happened in your heart when He said that to you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s what I prayed about. What was happening in my heart when I heard \u201cBe a priest.\u201d In that moment I felt so convicted that God was telling me \u201cBe a priest.\u201d But you know what? A lot of people would think I went to seminary like a week later. Ooh, nope. I didn\u2019t go for another year, because when I prayed over this sign, I felt like God was calling me. But the problem was that my heart wasn\u2019t ready, right. I still had a lot of fears, I still had a lot of struggles. My heart wasn\u2019t ready yet. And so I kept praying, and I actually did pray bigger than the sign. Because the sign was one thing, but what I now had to pray for was \u201cGod, convert my heart.\u201d Right. It\u2019s easy, I think, for us to, like, ask God to speak to us. But it\u2019s even harder for us to ask Him to change our heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pray-big\">Pray Big<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>And so what I encourage each one of us to do today is, yes, pray big. Ask God for anything you want. But don\u2019t just ask for a little magic trick, right. Ask God to communicate through signs, right &#8211; He does it all the time, right. I mean, the sacraments are outward signs of inward grace, right, big things happen. When you go to the store and you see like something that sticks out, like a beautiful baby, and you\u2019re like \u201cOh my gosh, I want to have a baby,\u201d right, that\u2019s a sign that you desire more love. You might desire a child, right. A baby. When you\u2019re driving and you get angry and someone cuts you off, that\u2019s a little sign that you have a little frustrated part of your heart, right. When your spouse leaves like their socks out, or they don\u2019t clean up after themselves and you get angry, that\u2019s a sign that you\u2019re frustrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so whether it\u2019s a voice, \u201cBe a priest,\u201d or it\u2019s somebody leaving something out on the counter, if something stirs in your heart, it was a sign communicating something, right. Even in this moment, right, you\u2019re feeling something. You\u2019re experiencing something. That\u2019s God moving your heart. That\u2019s a sign. And now what you\u2019re called to do is pray big. Ask God to give you a sign that communicates His love. One that just won\u2019t be in your head, but will actually transform your heart. Because, I\u2019ve got to say, I didn\u2019t go to seminary, right, for like a year, because what God had to do was communicate many things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"my-biggest-fear\">My Biggest Fear<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I\u2019ll finish on this note: It is my, you know, my biggest fear in the seminary and the journey to become a priest, or discerning a seminary, was that I would be alone. I would wake up one day a miserable old man, no wife, no kids. And so I was praying about that. I said \u201cGod, I\u2019m afraid I\u2019m going to wake up one day, no wife, no kids, and be an unhappy priest, and be miserable.\u201d And so I was praying, and all of a sudden I brought this fear to God, and what He did was He had me pray over it. And all of a sudden I was praying, and I said \u201cOkay God, what if I do wake up a miserable old priest, no wife, no kids, no nothing, and I die?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color\">So I brought that fear to God. I while I\u2019m bringing this fear to God, I read this book about <a href=\"https:\/\/praymoreretreat.org\/radical-love-mother-teresa\/\">Mother Teresa<\/a>, and this one little quote changed my life. This was a bigger sign than anything. The quote said <em>\u201cIf I make one child happy through the love of God, isn\u2019t it worth everything?\u201d<\/em> I read the quote again. <em>\u201cIf I make one child happy through the love of God, isn\u2019t it worth everything?\u201d<\/em> I closed the book, and I said \u201cOkay God, what if I do wake up a miserable man? No wife, no kids, no happiness, and I die?\u201d I imagined myself going up to heaven, and all of a sudden I was in heaven, there was 4 white walls, me and Jesus, He was standing there, and He said \u201cHey, thanks for being a priest.\u201d I said \u201cWell, God, it wasn\u2019t that good actually.\u201d He said \u201cNo, thank you for being a priest.\u201d I said \u201cGod, it wasn\u2019t that good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then He turned to His side and there was a guy behind Him. He said \u201cDo you know this guy?\u201d I said \u201cNo.\u201d He said \u201cSteve. You don\u2019t know Steve?\u201d I said \u201cNo, God. Who is Steve?\u201d He said \u201cWell, you don\u2019t know Steve, but Steve knows you. When Steve was living on earth, he wasn\u2019t choosing My love, he wasn\u2019t choosing God. He was choosing sin and, see, he was going to go to hell for eternity. But on earth, Steve met you, and because you had become a priest, he met you and he met Jesus, and now his whole life has changed. He met Me, God. In that moment of meeting you, he had a 180. He had a conversion. Now Steve is here in heaven forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And all of a sudden, as God said \u201cForever,\u201d something opened up inside of me. Something changed, and I thought \u201cOh my gosh. If I give up my life, someone who was going to go to hell could go to heaven forever? Whoa. I don\u2019t care God. I\u2019ll say yes to whatever, whether it\u2019s good or bad. What\u2019s 50 years of misery for someone to be in heaven for eternity? Yes, I\u2019ll give up everything. It\u2019s worth one soul.\u201d And the second we realize that if God makes us for something, He doesn\u2019t make us for misery, depression, and loneliness. That would be a mean God. If God creates us for something, then it\u2019s going to be amazing. And so that was a sign God had given me, the outward sign of \u201cBe a priest.\u201d I didn\u2019t go for a year. But the sign of \u201cOh my gosh, someone could go to heaven?\u201d That changed my heart, and I would give up everything for that soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color\">And so ask God to give you a sign that changes your heart, and pray big. \u201cGod, transform me, breathe life into me, and show me what? That I\u2019m called to live like You.\u201d Because here\u2019s a last thing: What happened in that moment when I prayed big and God gave me that image, was that I recognized that life was about others. It was about dying for others, being there for others. So yes, pray big. Ask God for a sign. And then live like Him, which is living and dying for other people. So this <a href=\"https:\/\/praymoreretreat.org\/looking-closer-at-joseph-this-advent-advent-2019\/\">Advent<\/a> season, don\u2019t be afraid. Pray big, and ask Christ to give you the signs that allow you to live more radically like Him. May the Almighty God bless you and all of your loved ones, and transform your heart to be more like Him. Father, Son, <a href=\"https:\/\/praymoreretreat.org\/how-to-lean-on-the-holy-spirit-during-suffering-healing-2019\/\">Holy Spirit<\/a>. Kyle Manno<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:26% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/praymoreretreat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Fr.-Kyle-Manno-Advent.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2642 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/praymoreretreat.org\/speaker-fr-kyle-manno\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fr. Kyle Manno<\/a><\/strong> grew up in Palatine, IL with two loving parents and the youngest of four children. He went to Northern Illinois University where he studied music. During his time in college, he started taking sign language classes at the local parish with a priest. He soon discovered that priests and the faith are much more enjoyable than he ever thought. After much prayer, he decided to apply to the seminary. Upon graduating from NIU with a Music Education degree he was accepted to Mundelein Seminary where he spent two years studying philosophy and another four years studying theology. During his time in seminary he was able to study Spanish in Mexico, as well as in an El Salvadorian Orphanage with 250 kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ on June 4, 2016. Of that day he says, \u201cI can honestly say, that was the happiest day of my life. I cannot imagine doing anything else\u2026As a deacon, I was ordained to serve. As a priest, I was ordained to give up my life so that all of you can get to heaven.\u201d Father Manno currently serves as Vocation Director for the Diocese of Rockford and Parochial Vicar of the Newman Center at Northern Illinois University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Father Manno also has a street evangelization project entitled, &#8220;Priest with Mic&#8221; in which he speaks to people around the U.S. about their beliefs and thoughts. He recently also brought &#8220;Priest with a Mic&#8221; to Sirius XM radio with a 3 part series that talked on Evangelization, Happiness, and love.
